How long does it typically take to complete a commission painting?

Commission paintings done on canvas can take anywhere from a few days to several months/half a year. This will depend on the size of the canvas, the content, and the purpose for the piece. i.e., A condo corporation commissioning a painting for the lobby of a new building that needs to be completed in 2 weeks will be completed within that time frame.

What do you base your pricing on for commission paintings?

This will depend on the size of the piece, the content of the painting (amount of detail and time it will take), and ultimately the perceived timeline/deadline for the painting as requested by the client.

How do you typically price a mural project?

Mural projects are priced based on the size of the wall, surface of the wall (Flat concrete is easier to paint on than brick or stucco in poor condition, or corrugated metal etc. ), content of the design, access to the wall to paint (If a scissor lift is needed to paint a 20’W x 40’H wall, the access should allow the lift to be operational within the space and ultimately be safe to use. This would apply to scaffolding and ladders as well), deadline for the mural to be complete, additional costs besides my wage is the cost of materials, transportation, and if outside of Ottawa, accommodations.

How long does a mural typically take to finish?

A mural generally takes a minimum of 3 days to 3 weeks to complete, depending on the size and location of the mural. The average timeframe we can finish large projects is 8 to 12 days.

Do you have certification to operate scissor lifts and other aerial platforms?

We are both certified to operate a variety of aerial work platforms and equipment. We also have general commercial liability insurance in place for working in construction zones, city property and other locations that require to be additionally insured during a mural project.

Are you open to doing consultations with community members to create a mural design/concept?

We are always open to working with community members, BIA board members or other community representatives to aid the early stages of the design process.

Have you worked with youth and/or children in the production of a mural?

Yes, we have worked with youth groups and art students in the early stages of a mural design as well as the in person painting of the piece. We have also done workshops in the past focusing on coming up with a concept and imagery for the mural, how to scale up the design to work on a large scale, and what mediums would be appropriate to paint the mural at that scale. These were mostly interior projects or smaller scale murals that did not require painting with lift equipment or any work platforms.

Have you done live painting events?

Yes, I have done live painting at a variety of events for different companies and private parties and weddings. Some of these clients includes Cleland Engineering, The Toronto Rapters, Adidas, The Ottawa Dental Society, Black Book Lifestyle, True Dot Design, Greater Ottawa Home Builders Association, and Art Battle Canada.

Do you paint murals in residential spaces? i.e., Private residence, house, apartment etc.

Yes, I am open to taking mural commissions for residential spaces.

What type of paint do you use?

I use a variety of interior/exterior acrylic paint and Montana 94 Spray Paint. For indoor mural projects I use a water-based spray paint and interior acrylic. Medium will vary depending on the surface.

How long do your outdoor murals last once complete?

Outdoor murals are always protected with an archival aerosol sealant or an industrial anti-graffiti coating that protects the mural for up to 10 years. This sealant protects the vibrancy of the color and UV protection, and depending on the sealant, can be cleaned and pressure washed
